Both of these exist because S3 egress fees are expensive, and they attack the problem from different directions. Backblaze B2 is the cheaper place to keep bytes: $0.006/GB-month against Cloudflare R2's $0.015, so storage alone is about 2.5 times cheaper. Cloudflare charges nothing for egress at all, ever. Backblaze gives you free egress up to three times your average monthly stored volume, then charges $0.01/GB. That threshold decides most cases. If you store 1 TB and serve 2 TB a month, B2 is free on egress and cheaper on storage, so it wins outright. If you store 1 TB and serve 20 TB, you are paying B2 roughly $170 a month in egress on top of storage, and R2's flat zero makes it dramatically cheaper despite the higher per-GB rate. Backblaze also charges $0.004 per thousand read operations where R2 charges $0.00036, an order of magnitude apart, which matters for workloads with many small reads. R2's other advantage is that it sits inside Cloudflare, so Workers, Cache and the CDN are adjacent with no egress between them. B2's advantage is simplicity and a genuine S3-compatible API with no platform attached. Backup and archive, where data goes in and rarely comes out: Backblaze. Public assets served at volume: R2, and the egress line alone will justify it.
