Neither of these is cheap, but they are expensive in different ways. IONOS hides its cost in the renewal: $1.00 for a .com in year one, $20.00 every year after, which is 92% over the $10.44 true cost. Gandi charges $11.00 in year one and $38.38 after, which is 267% over. Over three years a .com costs $41.00 at IONOS and $87.76 at Gandi. On .dev, $12.50 then $25.00 against $16.39 then $39.98. On .org, $1.00 then $20.00 against $17.20 then $39.98. IONOS is cheaper on every gTLD in the table after the first year, and dramatically cheaper in it. Gandi's counterargument is not price. It is a registrar with French and EU jurisdiction, a history back to 1999, bundled mailboxes and SSL, and a documented policy record, which for some organisations is a procurement requirement rather than a preference. IONOS is also European, German rather than French, and bundles its own hosting and email, so the jurisdiction argument does not separate them as cleanly as it might. What does separate them is that IONOS's pricing relies on the renewal cliff to work, and Gandi's relies on you valuing the institution. If neither of those appeals, both are considerably more expensive than the registrars at the top of this table.
