This is the clearest illustration on Pikkly of why renewal price is the only number worth comparing. Gandi's first-year prices look competitive: $11.00 for a .com against Porkbun's $11.08, essentially identical. The renewals are not close. Gandi renews a .com at $38.38 where Porkbun renews at $11.08, which is 267% over the $10.44 that the name actually costs a registrar, against Porkbun's 6%. On .dev the pattern repeats at $39.98 versus $12.87, on .org at $39.98 versus $11.84, and on .ai at $179.76 versus $82.70. Gandi settled on a flat renewal near $40 for most gTLDs, which means the more ordinary your domain, the worse the deal. Gandi has real history behind it. It was founded in 1999, it has a genuine no-bullshit policy record, it hosts in France under European jurisdiction, and it bundles mailboxes, SSL and a decent API. For an organisation that needs an EU-based registrar with invoices and support in French, those things have value. But they are being paid for at roughly $28 a year per domain over cost, and that is a subscription to a registrar rather than a domain price. If you hold more than a handful of names the arithmetic is decisive: ten domains at Gandi renewal pricing costs around $280 more each year than the same ten at Porkbun, for a service that is not ten times better.
