RunPod and Lambda are both built for people renting GPUs by the hour, and they disagree about what that should cost. On on-demand H100s, RunPod asks $2.89/hr and Lambda $3.29/hr. On A100s it is $1.59 against $2.79, where Lambda is 75% more expensive. On B200s, $6.79 against $9.86. Lambda is the more expensive provider on every model both of them list. What Lambda sells for the difference is a cleaner, more predictable machine: it runs its own data centres, the instances come with a maintained ML stack, multi-GPU nodes are properly interconnected for distributed training, and capacity behaves like an ordinary cloud rather than a marketplace. For a training run that must finish, that reliability is the product. RunPod's model is different in kind. Alongside its on-demand tier it runs a community tier where third parties supply the hardware, and that is where its cheapest prices live: an H100 at $1.99/hr and an H200 at $0.50/hr. Those are real prices for real GPUs, but the machine is somebody else's, availability fluctuates, and a long job can be interrupted. The sensible split follows the workload. Interactive work, inference, experiments and anything you can checkpoint and restart: RunPod, and the community tier if you are price-sensitive. A multi-day distributed training run where an interruption costs more than the hourly rate: Lambda's premium is insurance you are actually buying.
